Take A Staycation This Summer!

Summer’s here! School’s out, temperatures are up, and the long, hot days are laid out before us, ready to be enjoyed! But…gas prices are also high, the economy is still on the mend, and it might be too difficult – and not to mention, expensive – to steal away for your normal week or two of vacation.

No worries, San Antonians…we’re among a lucky segment of the population who can take advantage of an affordable, quick and easy staycation! Hop in the car, pack a lunch, and within an hour, you can escape the city confines and enjoy a taste of Texas history, culture and tradition.

Here’s just a few short day trips, or staycations, that will help you easily escape for a day!

Fredricksburg: One of the most popular small towns in Texas, historic Fredericksburg offers visitors quaint shopping and fine dining in a relaxing Hill Country atmosphere with a heavy German influence. Fredricksburg is also rich in history and is home to several events and festivals throughout the year. From wine tasting to peach picking, there’s something for everyone!

Bandera: Referred to as the Cowboy Capital of the World, the small town of Bandera holds a really big place in the hearts of Texans. Like a scene from your favorite western, Bandera reminds us of a different, more authentic, era. Bandera embodies the cowboy in its strong rodeo tradition. Even today you’ll often see horses tied to downtown hitching posts! Dude ranches, secluded cabins tucked away in the hills, and local honky-tonks where the music is lively and the dance floor is full – Bandera has it all!

Gruene: Home of Texas’ oldest dance hall, downtown Gruene is alive with music and authentic German cuisine. Take in a day of art and culture in this historic town at its monthly Gruene Market Days, or browse the displays of up to 100 artisans and craftsmen. Float the Comal or Guadalupe, do a little wine tasting, or dine at the Gristmill situated on a bluff, overlooking the Guadalupe River.

Boerne: Offering small town charm in a picturesque setting, Boerne will take you on a journey through quaint, historic buildings, an eclectic collection of restaurants, cafes, coffee shops, and bakeries, and plenty of artistic activity. Plenty of caves, rivers, lakes and trails for outdoor enthusiasts to explore.

So take a staycation this summer and explore the best of what Texas has to offer…all within just a few miles of your own backyard.
