Discover Bright, Bold Mexico In San Antonio

If you’re a fan of our facebook page or follow us on twitter, you probably have already seen our posts and tweets about the Downtown Operations Department encouraging locals to visit downtown San Antonio. Every Tuesday, the public can enjoy free meter parking after 5 p.m. and specials and discounts at participating downtown businesses and restaurants.

Now, we’d like to shed a little light on some of San Antonio’s greatest downtown treasures. First up? The historic Market Square!

San Antonians have been shopping at Market Square since before Texas joined the United States. The first businesses to open on Market Square were a pharmacy and dry goods store. The area also served as a marketplace for produce and other foods. Art has always also had a special place in this vibrant cultural center.

Located on West Commerce, Market Square today features a Farmers Market where shops and food courts combine the cultural, artistic and ethnic influences of the Southwest and Mexico. Just across the way, don’t forget to visit the El Mercado, the largest Mexican marketplace outside of Mexico.

Looking for a unique, one-of-a-kind gift made by a working San Antonio artist? While at Market Square, you will always find an artist/craftsmen set-up along the outside plazas demonstrating and selling their unique handmade items.

Stay for lunch or dinner!

  • Mi Tierra Cafe & Bakery: Open 24-hours and festooned with Christmas lights year round! Strolling Mariachi musicians and a huge selection of classic Tex-Mex dishes.
  • La Margarita Restaurant & Oyster Bar: Excellent food and the best margaritas in San Antonio!
  • Farmer’s Market Food Court: Excellent food and variety.

And on August 4-5, visit Market Square for Primer Sabado (first Saturday) for a special two-day back to school event filled with local entertainment, arts & crafts, children activities, food & more.
